Breaking Down Barriers through Movement

ThrowDown Dance Convention is a platform that celebrates the power and diversity of creative movement through masterclass workshops, panel discussions, and a community dance competition & showcase. The Toronto Centre for the Arts provides a lively setting to discuss, share, and celebrate our successes and to strategize new initiatives that provide equity and access to dance programming for all Torontonians.

Rules, Regulations & Eligibility

Eligibility to participate

  • Dancers must be between 8 to 24 years old
  • Teams of all levels and sizes are welcome
  • Teams are invited to creatively incorporate themes through costume, music and dance
  • If your team is affiliated with a school, community organization or dance academy/studio, they must be identified on the registration form
  • If you are not affiliated with a community organization, school or dance company, an individual over 18 years of age must sign off on your team registration


Your dance/music/routine MUST be 3:00 to 3:30 minutes in length.

Mixes must have sound for a minimum of 3:00. When your music hits 3:30, it will be shut off. Music limits do not include your entry on and off of the stage. We will not be allowing extensive prop and set changes. Swearing will not be tolerated in your music selection and your set must be suitable for all audiences.



Choreography must be original. Keep it tasteful, and again, suitable for all audiences.

Judging Criteria:

Choreography           (originality/technical difficulty)

Delivery          (timing/synchronization) (stage presence/attitude)

Music              (originality/appropriateness/creativity/editing)

Appearance   (originality/costumes/make-up/use of props)


There will be a panel of 3 judges. After each performance, 1-2 judges selected at random will provide immediate feedback.


Order of Performances:

This will be released after the registration deadline or when all dance teams have filled out the online registration. It will be determined by a random draw that will be recorded in one take and posted online a week before the competition.

Creating A Balance As Communities Shift – An expert panel will explore and exchange ideas on how to respond, advocate, and innovate in our schools, studios, and communities to provide dance programs and training for participants of all ages with different backgrounds, abilities, and evolving needs. How do we balance various cultural contexts, socio-economic conditions, and the varying landscapes in our communities? We welcome you for can-do thinking, deep discussion, and exchange of big ideas.
